“I Love Dunkin’. I ride for Dunkin’.” - Ezra Koenig
Dunkin' Donuts has been interwoven into the fabric of Vampire Weekend, both as a source of inspiration for the band members and as a continually revisited touchpoint in Ezra Koenig’s cultural commentary. A chance encounter at a Dunkin’ Donuts during the recording of Contra inspired “Young Lion,” and Koenig declared the tenth anniversary of Modern Vampires of the City a “good occasion to slam a Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee and reflect.”
Koenig also just loves the chain in general and has repeatedly professed his love for it: “Dunkin Donuts is one of the chains I’ve always had a soft spot for. I almost consider it a heritage brand of the tri-state area.” The brand has been repeatedly discussed on Time Crisis, and years before before Jeremy Strong proclaimed he was “All in for Dunkin’”, Jake Longstreth and the TC Crew even coined the strangely similar “I’m down for Dunkin’.”
Dunkin’ is also the rare chain that has managed to maintain a strong regional identity as it has expanded worldwide, just like Vampire Weekend has preserved its essence as an East Coast/New York City band despite broadening its worldview with each new album and relocating its HQ to the West Coast. With so many connections between the brand and the band, it seemed only fitting to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Only God Was Above Us and part 2 of the OGWAU tour with this donut-themed shirt.
